In which cases the doctor may prescribe a general blood test:
- Check fasting requirements. Fasting is necessary for tests like a lipid panel (cholesterol) and basic metabolic panel. If required, do not eat or drink anything but water for 8 to 12 hours before your appointment.
- Stay well-hydrated. Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours before your blood draw, unless otherwise instructed. Proper hydration makes your veins easier for the phlebotomist to find, which can make the process smoother. Avoid diuretics like coffee, tea, and alcohol, which can cause dehydration.
- Manage medications and supplements. Inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as any vitamins or supplements you are taking. Some, like biotin (vitamin B7), can interfere with lab results and may need to be paused for a certain period. Do not stop taking a prescribed medication unless your doctor explicitly tells you to.
